at the faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education
of the University of French West Indies

General information on Guadeloupe : The island - The town : Guadeloupe is a French overseas department since 1946. Guadeloupe is the most important French West Indies. It is an archipelago (1704km2) with continental Guadeloupe (1438km2), Désirade , Saintes and Marie-Galante islands and in the north Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin islands. Continental Guadeloupe is made by two peninsulas : Basse-Terre with its tropical forest and Grande-Terre on East Side.
Weather : Tropical weather with trade winds. Temperature of the Sea : 24 to 28°C. Annual temperature mean : 25°C with intermittent rain in September and October.
Local time : GMT-4h (i.e. in winter = -5 hours to Paris, in summer = -6 to Paris)
Population : In 1999 Guadeloupe represent 412 632 residents (i.e. 248 per km2). Principal Towns : Abymes (62 947 residents), Saint-martin (29 061 residents), Pointe à Pitre (20 835 residents) and the chief town of department : Basse-terre (12 433 residents).
Travel links and distances : Guadeloupe has an international airport daily serve to Paris… Distance from Guadeloupe to France metropolitan : 6700km

University : Teaching and higher education is the same that in France. In Pointe à Pitre, campus of Fouillole has about 6000 students in Natural Sciences faculty, medical faculty, judicial right faculty, and faculty of Sciences in Sport. Sport studies were first integrate into Natural Sciences faculty in 1989 and it was recognised as a university education since 1994. Around 250 to 500 students are taught by 20 titular teachers (professor, lecturers and qualified schoolteachers) and non-titular qualified schoolteachers in the Sports faculty at the University of Antilles-Guyane since 1999.

There are 42 UFR STAPS in France where sport can be studied. The formal progress of a sports scientists studies is the same in all the universities, however, there are some differences by an offer of studying options and orientation subjects.

Language : Foreign students have to decide on convenient French knowledge in order to follow the lectures.

Study paths and conclusions

The teaching profession studies : The licence acts as a qualification for all teaching professions. There are two different entrance exams :

  • CAPEPS (certificat d'aptitude au professorat de l'éducation physique et sportive) after the licence,
  • Agrégation : the next highest level after the maîtrise after successfully passing the CAPEPS.

Learning arrangement : Each academic year is split into two semesters with several Teaching Units (Unités d'enseignement : U.E.). Several learning arrangements build Teaching Units. Different methods of teaching are possible :

  • lectures (cours magistraux : CM),
  • seminars or physical practicals (traveaux dirigés ou pratiques : TD),
  • Scientific homework (mémoire),
  • Placement (stage).


Living costs : To have enough for the minimal need (accommodations, food, travel, etc...) you need at least 540 euro per month, for travelling and going out around 150 euro more.

University restaurant : The university restaurant in France opens in the evenings. The price of a ticket is about 2.5 euro.

European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

Aim : ECTS will be attributed to each part of a study path.

Through ECTS the study themes will get 60 recognition points each every academic year.
(30 credits +/-1 per semester in the first cycle)

Study paths are divided into separate parts, then the unit teaching (unité d'enseignement UE) are brought together.
