Announcement of the 2nd International Conference Caribbean Waves

to be held in the Hotel Salako, Pointe de la Verdure, Gosier in Guadeloupe (F.W.I.) January 22-25, 2013.

Because of the recent events in Indonesia, American Samoa, Chile and Japan, it is well known that no coastal places in the world are protected against tsunamis, and above all the subduction zones. The 2010 Haiti earthquake reminded us that the Caribbean is also endangered. Indeed, since the America's discovery in 1492 by C. Colombus, a handful of deadly events, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, have occurred: all of them able to trigger local or regional tsunamis. The threat could also come from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, illustrated by the most famous historical event: the 1755 Lisbon earthquake which was followed by a powerful transoceanic tsunami that struck the Caribbean about 7 h after the mainshock, reaching heights of several meters in many islands of the Lesser Antilles. Besides, the region is under the threat of volcanic eruptions and their potential associated tsunamis: for example, Soufrière Hill of Montserrat and Kick'em Jenny submarine volcano of Grenada. Volcano flank instabilities and submarine mass failures could also trigger tsunami waves. In addition, Meteorology in this region is the origin of powerful surges and swells generated by tropical depression systems; the swells are able to travel through the Caribbean, being capable of severe consequences on navigation and coastal installations, as well as tsunamis.

Thus, how to prevent and protect the coastal endangered increasing communities against such waves?

This second edition of the Caribbean Waves Conference will be a great opportunity for geophysicists, geologists, geographers, oceanographers and coastal engineers to discuss together about marine natural hazards (tsunamis, swells, surges, flooding) and their generation modes (earthquakes, eruptions, landslides, cyclones, etc.) within the Caribbean with a special attention on the Lesser Antilles islands. All aspects from the description of historical events, results of field surveys and numerical simulations of past and potential events, prediction and mitigation of possible events, risk assessment and early warning systems will be in the framework of the conference. Further discussions about general tectonic, geology, coral reef protection, mangroves rehabilitation processes, etc., are directly concerned. A special session concerning the production of electricity using the waves' energy as a sustainable method is also planned.
